How do I know if I have a nail fungus?

My toenails are thick and seem discolored. I'm wondering if I have a fungus? How do I know if I have a nail fungus?
Dear:

you can know that if you have fungus in the nails by detecting whiteness between the nail and the skin (under the nail) but if the discoloration in the nail itself the problem may be caused by zinc deficiency.

';The Bad News'; My guess is that yes you probably do have a nail bed fungus based on your brief description, however,

';The Good News'; this is a common ailment and easily treated. You may treat this topically or with oral medication. I found that the easiest and most convenient method is taking an oral medication called Lamsil. This problem takes up to six months to completely remedy because basically you have to grow out a newly unblemished nail bed after you kill the fungus. You only take the medication for one or two weeks to kill the fungus. I think you will need an Rx for the oral Lamsil, the topical ointment is sold over the counter. Good Luck!
Have you gone to your dermatologist? This is very common and more people have it then we think. Toe fungus under the nail will make your toe nails seems a bit grey or greenish. It's most noticable on your big toe. There are prescription drugs that will help but they are oral, processed and will damage other organs. We've had great success with an all natural product for this condition. If you would like more information please send me a note to estreleaha@yahoo.ca. I'm happy to help you.
It really does sound like a fungus. You have to be careful because it can spread. Also, it won't get better on it's own - you have to treat it. You most likely will want to see a doctor for a definite diagnosis and suggestions for treatment. The prescribed medicine can cause damage to kidneys and liver however, and you would be well advised to look into some natural remedies.
Possibly yes, there are over the counter anti-fungal treatments
Is the color yellowish, breaking off, and underneath the nail is there like a white residue? These are signs of a nail fungus. My girl friend spent $200 a month for a prescription, and it worked. But, another friend and I was reading a column in the newspaper by Dr. Gott and he suggested Vicks Vapo Rub ($7 ), and we tried it and it worked. This is what I did; At night I rubbed the stuff all over my feet, put a plastic bag over the feet, and then a pair of socks. During the day, I used just a little on my toes. It probably was four weeks or so. My friend and were amazed and didn't know when the cure happened. Fungus not only erodes the nail, but so embarrassing! I hope it works for you, too
