What are some simple, non-prescription ways to cure a blackened toe nail that is infected with a fungus?

I have heard of ';cures'; that range from using bleach to Efferdent. Any tried and true suggestions? What are some simple, non-prescription ways to cure a blackened toe nail that is infected with a fungus?
Well, one of the oldest remedies, (and one that still works today) is to really cover up the nail daily with mentholated cream such as vicks vapo-rub. It produces an anti-fungal and airtight environment which kills off the fungus that causes nail infection. Vasoline will also work, but the menthol-infused petroleum creams work better and faster...just a bit smellier. ;)

Used it on my father's toe...worked great! What are some simple, non-prescription ways to cure a blackened toe nail that is infected with a fungus?
Try to find *Dr G's Nails* it is a topical ointment that is put on, under, around the nail. I've heard alot of people say that it really works. I've not personally used it but from the testimonials I've heard it might be worth a try.

Start soaking your toes [and feet if necessary] in Listerine [or store brand] each night until fungus goes away - sure worked for me !!!!!
First of all, if you're 100% sure its a fungus, and not a bacterial infection, no ';home remedy'; will relieve this condition. You need to go to the doctor and get anti-fungal medicine. Either way, have your doc look at it before it spreads and you have a bigger problem.
First of all, are you sure you have fungus. Some other causes of blackened toe nail are subungual hematoma (bleeding under the nail due to trauma). Second, OTC medications do not work. You have to get under the nail to kill the infection. You are better off seeing a podiatrist if you really want to get rid of the infection.
The black is because of inflamation and maybe ristricted circulation?
